Robertson Stainless Steel Magnetic Slider

The Bruce Charles Designs Robertson Stainless magnetic slider introduces a totally new and unique variation on our classic Brass Robertson Magnetic Slider for your enjoyment.

**NEW!! Effective 3/11/24: We have made some changes to all of the Robertson magnetic sliders. We switched from a 5mm diameter magnet to a 6mm diameter magnet of N52 grade, which our testing has shown provides a better experience.

Features:

  • Double-sided slider for two different slider experiences in one.
  • Symmetrical design allows for flipping one slider on top of another.
  • Magnet strength: Medium-strong on the strong side
  • Magnet configuration: 3 x 2
  • Magnet Type: 6mm diameter x 3.5mm length N52 grade
  • Dimensions: 31 x 49 x 11mm
  • Weight: 2.1 oz
  • Recommended for ages 16+
  • Proudly made in Dallas Tx, USA.

Superior Craftsmanship

The one piece body is CNC machined from a single piece of stainless. The magnet bores are held to very tight tolerances to provide a secure press fit without any adhesives. The final magnet depth is set to precisely .8mm from the top surface for the strong side of the magnets using purpose-built jigs and fixtures.

Sliding surfaces intentionally have toolmarks which, after break-in, will provide a wonderfully smooth sliding surface.

I decided that the overall design is so delightfully minimalistic that I didn’t want to put our logo on it. The only mark is a subtle “+” to indicate the strong side of the slider. So we’ll just rely on word of mouth when your friends ask you “Where did you get that!?” We know you’re good for it.

Excellence by Design

The original brass Robertson is the result of a long design and redesign process that ran into a dead end. I was about to give up altogether. But before I abandoned the machining setup, I decided to try something totally different: A fidget slider with exposed magnets on both sides for symmetrical functionality. As soon as I tried the first one I knew I had stumbled onto something unique and enjoyable.

First, it was smooth. I mean SMOOTH. In fact, you could make it bold and throw in an extra “O” and that still doesn’t capture how smooth it was. So little brass is touching during sliding and rotation that it feels like a precision bearing.

Second, it was light and slim. At 11mm, it’s less than ⅔ the thickness of the Lowrey. If you prefer older measurement systems, it’s less than half an inch thick. I’m not sure how many barleycorns that is. See why metric is awesome?

Third, the exposed magnets on both sides enables two things:

  • The magnet depths are set differently on the two sides so there is a strong side and a weak side. You can change between strong and weak just by moving one slider to the back or front and using the other side magnets. On the strong side, marked with a "+", the magnets are set to .8mm from the surface, while they are 1.2mm from the surface on the opposite side.
  • The Robertson can do flips if you hold it JUST right.

Fourth, it is unique in its skeletonized design. This creates a slider that is visually engaging, and as a nice side effect, it also means it is very light! It’s actually lighter than our Aluminum & Brass Lowrey! But the mass is out near the edges, as are the magnets, so the inertia is there for laddering moves.

A Gift to be Cherished

This is an excellent product and I love it...

This is an excellent product and I love it! It feels solid in the hand but not too weighty, thanks to the skeleton style design with the exposed magnets. The sound of the stainless steel lightly shifting on each other followed by the haptic clicking is great! Because the magnets are not set directly in the center of each slab, there are two magnet strengths based on which side you put together. The lighter strength makes moves quieter and more agile, while the heavier strength provides the strong tactile clicking feedback. This slider is great to play around with and very well made! I highly recommend it to anyone who likes to fidget. I haven't put it down since I got it.

Great feel and sound

Nicely balanced with good leverage pushing on the edges. In addition to pure fidgeting, it's a good dexterity exercise too. The steel-on-steel sound is great, and this slider can be manipulated both quietly and with more clackey sound depending on how it's moved. Going around the edges like the old Tempest game is quieter.

Excellent craftsmanship! Appreciate that the sliders have magnets on both sides and it is a frame pattern, both allow for additional ways to manipulate the pieces.

Can't take it out of my hand

I got this slider the other week and haven't been able to take it out of my hand. I purchased the '=' plate to put in the middle and it is a great addition. Lots of tricks and combinations, with only more to learn and figure out!

I plan on getting the 2x2s next, I can see those being as useful as this bigger one - and I'm very curious if they will be compatible with one another. I like to jump the slider around the edges of the other plates - if the smaller squares have the same dimensions as these ones I can see that working well! From what I can tell by the dimensions, I think the magnets should eb the same width apart, but the bracket itself might be a tad smaller. We'll see!!

Will this device alone be the thing that gets me to stop biting my nails once and for all, more than 30 years later? It's too soon to say for sure, but it sure is fun to play with in the meantime.

This little thing is, without doubt, the best 'fidget toy' I've ever played with. It's just the right size, weight, and heft, with extremely satisfying 'click-click' movement from the magnets. Essential for me is that it's usable with one hand; 'fidget spinners' don't work for me for that reason.

In short, this is a beautifully crafted, smartly designed little device that I can't stop playing with. It wasn't cheap, but it certainly feels worth the cost.

I have a feeling this won't be my last purchase.
